Wedding Dresses

Despite the holiday season, we are working on our next display already. It will feature the dresses, stories and photos of local women on the day they got married.

I've been asking nearly every woman I come across (and some men!) whether there is a wedding dress lurking in their closet. I've had good responses but still don't know exactly how many we'll get. Our space is limited, but I'd like to get a few more 'yes, I do's' before we say we have enough.

If you have a wedding dress and/or a wedding photo that you'd like to loan for 3 months, please contact us. It could be old or new, borrowed or blue - as long as you are local to the Otautau District. If not, what is your wedding story? Did you elope? How did you get married?

Our display will open in February 2012 so put it on your calendar.

Coincidentally, Te Papa have just opened a wedding dress display too. The exhibition is called "Unveiled: 200 years of wedding fashion." These remarkable dresses and wedding suits are from the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) representing rural and urban weddings for the last two centuries. Sounds like a great exhibition.

We're open Wednesdays and Sundays, 2pm-4pm, and by request. Your comments are always welcome!

Christmas Street Fair - II

The Christmas Street Fair was great fun. The weather held up - no rain - thank goodness. And a nice crowd came to enjoy the event.

We were selling a variety of things - lots of books which Jan Lowrey (Otautau Heritage Trust) helped with, home baking, and a Christmas cake raffle. We had about 70 people buy tickets for the Christmas cake but of course there was only one lucky winner.

Here's our table. The space was graciously granted by the Salvation Army shopkeepers. We had a prime location in front of their furniture store.

This year, one of our newest offerings was candy floss and balloons. Kids loved it. They got to watch the candy floss being made. Here's Cindy and Margaret preparing to whip up another batch.

Another new thing we tried this year was a chocolate wheel. Buy a ticket, hopefully win a prize. This is Peter Gutsell doin' the hard sell. He and Peter Campbell (left) sold loads of tickets for the chocolate wheel. Lots of great prizes were won.

Thanks to everyone who gave their support to the Otautau Museum. This was a great event, and we'll see you all at the Ford Day next year.

We're open Wednesdays and Sundays, 2pm-4pm, and by request. Your comments are always welcome!

We'll have a chocolate wheel, Christmas cake raffle, books and odds and ends to sell. Stop by and say hello and show your support. Hope to see you there. The fair starts at 5pm and closes at 8pm.
